*July 8 - English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, returning from Livorno (where he set up ''The Liberal'' magazine with Leigh Hunt) to Lerici, is drowned when his boat sinks in a storm in the Ligurian Sea. His body, washed up ten days later on the beach near Viareggio, is cremated there in the presence of Lord Byron and Edward John Trelawny who claims to have seized Shelley's heart from the flames. *The ''Noctes Ambrosianae'', imaginary colloquies, begin to appear in ''Blackwood's Magazine'' (Edinburgh).
